What Do the New CAC Rules Mean for Your Business Name Update?

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has introduced new, compulsory requirements for anyone trying to update their business name details online.

The rules take effect immediately, and they are designed to tighten verification, protect business owners, and keep CAC’s records accurate.

The announcement, shared on the commission’s official X page, explains that applicants must now submit more personal and contact details before any update can be approved.

This applies to all business names, whether you are correcting a small error, changing information, or updating your contact details.

What you must now provide

Under the new guidelines, every business name online update must include:

  • Your date of birth
  • A registered office email
  • The proprietor’s email address
  • A phone number for the registered office or the proprietor
  • A valid means of identification

These new requirements are meant to strengthen CAC’s verification process. With more accurate data, the commission can confirm who owns a business, prevent impersonation, and reduce the risk of fraud.

Why CAC updated the rules

According to CAC, the new guidelines are part of ongoing reforms to improve how business information is managed. The commission wants a cleaner, more reliable database that helps:

  • Speed up compliance checks
  • Improve communication with business owners
  • Deliver safer, more efficient online services

For many years, the CAC has been trying to modernise its operations. Moving from manual paperwork to digital platforms was a major step, but keeping those digital records accurate and secure is just as important. These new rules are another part of that transition.

What business owners should expect

If you are planning to update your business name details online, be ready to provide complete and correct information. Missing details may lead to delays in processing your request.

For entrepreneurs, this change means:

  • A more secure update process
  • Fewer chances of fraudulent changes
  • Faster responses from the CAC once your details match their verification system

What to note

The CAC is the main body in charge of registering and supervising business names and companies in Nigeria. With these new requirements, the commission aims to create a business environment where records are trustworthy and updates happen smoothly.

If your business details need to be updated soon, ensure you prepare all the required information to avoid unnecessary delays.
