*Former Nigerian President, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB) Should Not Be Honoured Or Celebrated By Nigerians*
The former Nigerian President, Babangida does not deserve any respect or honour from well-meaning Nigerians due to so many atrocities he committed during his cruel 8 years as the head of state of the country. Babangida’s regime ushered in full scale bribery and corruption into every fabric of the country because of his own greedy nature. He bribed traditional, religious and political leaders, and silenced them all, so he can rule the country as he so wished. Also during hs time, he openly and boldly opposed *freedom of the press*. No journalist can report freely on any sensitive matter that relates to IBB’s government. We must not forget the tragic assassination of the brilliant journalist, *Dele Giwa* who was gruesomely murdered with a letter-bomb by IBB Juntas. How about the *Ejigbo plane crash* that killed several young and brilliant Nigerian Military Service Members. It was also during IBB’s tenure that Nigerian public colleges and universities experienced the *worst interruptions in academic programs* in the history of the country. I was in college then, and the country lost the entire 1992 Academic year to ASUU strikes and other closures due to Babangida’s nonchalant attitude towards education. Similarly, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and other social-political organizations could not enjoy any peace under Babangida’s rule. The *worst of all Babangida’s havoc came when he singlehandedly annulled the free and fair 1993 Presidential election that was galantly won by the Late Chief MKO Abiola.* This IBB’s decision ultimately *truncated the nascent democracy of Nigeria.* As a matter of fact, the silent devastating effects of the 1993 election annulment is one of the major reasons why Nigeria is still struggling to make any commendable political or economic progress till today. Therefore, it is very evident that the former Nigerian President, *Ibrahim Babangida DOES NOT deserve to be celebrated or honored for any reason, instead he should be crowned with the title of: The WORST President NIGERIA has ever had.* Whatever regrets IBB may be having by this time should just go with him to his grave.
