  1. All that Tinubu will have done was to call his Minister Wike to order to leave Fubara alone and not govern River state by proxy. Unfortunately Tinubu continues to govern Lagos State by proxy till date.

  2. Governor Fubara should call a press conference immediately and reject president Tinubu’s extraconstitutional declaration; under no circumstance must he and his deputy accept this coup.

  3. Hmmmmm. This seems like a premeditated move. Is there a breakdown of law and order to warrant this in Rivers Stare.
Why didn’t Tinubu declare State of emergency in Lagos state when all the dramas were going on there. But he resolved it politically. Now he is so quick to do this to Rivers people. This is unbelievable.
When you hear the old anthem being sung, it can only remind you of military destruction of Nigeria democracy.
When Tinubu bought back this anthem, destruction of democracy was brought back.
Hmmmmmm the gods are not to blame. Evil rules in Nigeria.

  4. If the President of Nigeria unilaterally suspends a democratically elected governor, it would be considered a violation of the 1999 Constitution and could lead to several legal and political consequences:

    1. Legal Consequences

Unconstitutional Action: Since there is no provision in the 1999 Constitution that allows the President to suspend a governor without due process, such an action would be deemed illegal and unconstitutional.

Judicial Intervention: The Supreme Court or a Federal High Court could nullify the suspension if challenged in court. The affected governor or the State House of Assembly could seek a court ruling to reinstate them.

Breach of Oath of Office: The President takes an oath to uphold the Constitution. Violating it could serve as grounds for legal action, including impeachment.

    2. Political Consequences

Impeachment (Section 143 of the Constitution): If the National Assembly determines that the President has engaged in “gross misconduct” (which includes violating the Constitution), they can initiate impeachment proceedings.

Loss of Legitimacy: Such an action would likely result in public outrage, political instability, and loss of confidence in the government.

Resistance from the State Government: The affected state may refuse to recognize the illegal action, creating a constitutional crisis.

    3. International Consequences

Condemnation by International Bodies: Organizations like the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU), and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) could view this as an abuse of power and possibly sanction Nigeria.

Economic and Diplomatic Impact: Investors and foreign governments may perceive Nigeria as unstable, leading to economic and diplomatic setbacks.

    Historical Context

A similar constitutional crisis occurred in 2006, when President Olusegun Obasanjo declared a state of emergency in Ekiti State and suspended Governor Ayo Fayose. This move was highly controversial and seen as an overreach of presidential power.

    Conclusion

If a Nigerian President illegally suspends a governor, they could face legal challenges, impeachment, political backlash, and international condemnation. The proper procedure for removing a governor remains impeachment by the State House of Assembly or a judicial ruling, not executive interference.

  5. Should Wike not be removed as a minister? We all know what Wike has done and keeps doing. Nigeria as an entity is a joke.

  6. Rivers people should avoid Wike & his candidate in the future, bc he can not bring a candidate & ridicule the candidate if he refuses to dance to his tune, this is a state for GOD’s sake not a nursery son & it’s not owned by one man, Rivers people be wise. BEWARE OF WIKE.
