New Tax Law: NRS now in Charge of Collecting Mineral Royalties

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has officially taken over the collection of mineral royalties from mining operators across the country.

This followed a meeting in Abuja between the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, and the Chairman of the NRS, Dr Zacch Adedeji, where both parties discussed how to work together under the new arrangement.

The move is based on the new tax laws, which give the NRS the power to manage all federally collectable revenue and account for it.

In a statement issued by Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser to the NRS Chairman, the new arrangement took effect from January 1, 2026, and was confirmed in a joint statement signed by both Alake and Adedeji.

Part of the statement said that following the signing of the new laws by President Bola Tinubu on June 26, 2025, the responsibility for administering mineral royalties moved to the NRS from January 1, 2026.

It added that the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development will still play an important technical role by providing mineral pricing data, geological information, and coordinating with industry players to support the royalty process.

Both agencies also agreed to work closely to make sure mining operators understand the new system and that the royalty framework is carried out in a way that supports the growth of the solid minerals sector.

The statement further said there will be a joint nationwide sensitisation programme for operators in the sector, especially to guide them on royalty filing and payment under the new tax laws.

It also revealed that the new system will include a modern digital platform for royalty administration from start to finish. Regular joint technical sessions will also be held to address any issues that may come up.

The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development and the NRS assured mining operators and the public that both institutions are fully aligned and committed to implementing the new royalty framework in an orderly, transparent, and sector-friendly way.

Mining operators were advised to continue meeting their filing and payment obligations under the new tax laws and to take part in the upcoming sensitisation programme.
