The people in Makoko need to be relocated elsewhere, and something clean and decent should be done with the Makoko area. Lagos aims to be a world-class city, and this will not get it there. Makoko is a slum, and the people living there deserve better living conditions.
The government should build free or low-cost housing in other areas and properly relocate the residents. This is what the Ethiopian government did with the slums in Addis Ababa. After that, they began transforming the city into a world-class capital—removing slums and replacing them with beautiful public parks, modern infrastructure, wide streets, wide sidewalks, and proper public lanes.
Why can’t Lagos do the same? Makoko is a slum and should not be turned into a tourist attraction. It is a slum, and the people living there deserve dignified housing and better living conditions.
