Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman has received praises from France international forward and 2018 FIFA World Cup winner Antoine Griezmann for his instant impact at Atletico Madrid, Soccernet.ng reports.

Griezmann, who won the Copa del Rey with Barcelona before rejoining Atletico in 2021, admits he is eager to see even more from the Super Eagles forward after a stunning debut performance.

Lookman marked his first appearance for Diego Simeone’s side in unforgettable fashion, scoring once and setting up another as Atletico swept aside Real Betis 5-0 to reach the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey.

The winter signing was heavily involved from the opening minutes, stretching Betis’ defence with sharp runs, quick feet and relentless pressing.

Griezmann, who was among the goalscorers on the night and the beneficiary of Lookman’s assist, highlighted the togetherness within the squad and the positive influence of the new arrivals.

“We’re a team, a dressing room, a club, and a very welcoming fanbase,” the Frenchman said as per Marca.

“Everyone who arrives is welcomed from the very first second, and we see that with the new arrivals. Let’s enjoy the new players and hope they bring us joy like tonight.”

The former Real Sociedad forward also explained the tactical discipline behind Atletico’s attacking fluency.

“We moved around a lot off the ball to provide solutions for the player with the ball, and that makes for a more fluid game. Tactical order is key, and that’s how the chances and the style of play we’re looking for appear.”

Lookman’s energy lifts Atletico

Atletico had already built a commanding lead before Lookman found the net, with David Hancko heading in from a Koke corner in the 12th minute and Giuliano Simeone doubling the advantage soon after with a composed finish inside the area.

Lookman then announced himself emphatically, bursting beyond the Betis back line in the 37th minute before calmly sliding the ball into the bottom corner to make it 3-0.

His influence continued after the break, producing a perfectly weighted through pass for Griezmann to smash home Atletico’s fourth from the edge of the box.

Thiago Almada completed the rout late on, firing in a rebound to seal a memorable night for Simeone’s side.

Speaking after the match, Lookman expressed both pride and ambition following his first outing in red and white.

“Very happy, very proud of the debut. Especially because of the team’s performance,” the former Atalanta man said.

“It’s been very easy thanks to my colleagues. Everyone has given me a great welcome. I’m happy.”

“I have to keep training and improving.”

The comprehensive victory sends Atletico into the Copa del Rey semi-finals where Barcelona, Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao await.
