Carrick hints at staying as Man United manager beyond end of season

Michael Carrick has expressed his desire to remain as Manchester United head coach beyond the end of the season, an indication that he would welcome an extended stay at Old Trafford if the club so decides.

Carrick has largely avoided discussion about his long-term future since being appointed as Ruben Amorim’s temporary successor on January 13, preferring to keep the focus on results and internal processes rather than public speculation.

Known for his understated approach, the former United midfielder has resisted engaging in conversations that could place pressure on the club’s hierarchy.

However, his comments this week hinted at quiet ambition and commitment when asked about United’s summer plans and his potential involvement in them.

“Nothing’s changed, to be honest,” Carrick said.

“I’m fully aware of the role I’m doing here and the responsibility I’ve got. We want to be successful, and I want the club to be successful beyond the end of the season, if that’s me, if that’s somebody else.”

“At this stage, I can’t control that, and we’ll see what happens, but it’s certainly about trying to improve the team and making Manchester United stronger. Results over a short period of time don’t change that.

“If they have changed, then there’s something wrong. It can’t be so knee-jerk, whether it’s really good or whether there are a few issues we need to solve.”

Carrick has overseen a positive run since taking over, with United winning three straight matches, but he remained deliberately measured when asked whether continued success could strengthen his case for the permanent role.

“I’m loving what I’m doing. I’m here,” he added. “I feel at home here, but I fully understand the situation, so I’m not getting too carried away.”
