The World Health Organization has donated medical supplies and laboratory consumables valued at over US$1 million to the Ghana Health Service to enhance diagnostic capacity and improve the quality of healthcare delivery across the country.

The official handover ceremony took place on 7 April 2026 at the WHO’s office in Accra, bringing together health officials, partners, and technical experts.

The supplies, procured through support from the Pandemic Fund, will contribute to the expansion of Ghana’s National External Quality Assessment and Quality Control (EQA/QC) programme. This initiative is critical to ensuring the accuracy and reliability of laboratory testing for priority diseases over the next three years.

Speaking at the event, WHO Representative to Ghana, Dr Fiona Braka, described the donation as a major step toward strengthening Ghana’s laboratory systems and safeguarding public health.

“This donation is a significant milestone in our collective effort to strengthen laboratory systems and improve the quality of healthcare delivery. By expanding the EQA/QC programme, we are ensuring that test results across the country are accurate, reliable, and trustworthy. This will directly enhance patient care, enable timely diagnosis and treatment, and ultimately save lives”, Dr Fiona Braka.

The consignment includes advanced laboratory equipment such as refrigerated centrifuges, diagnostic kits, and essential reagents and consumables required for high-quality testing and analysis.

Dr Braka emphasized that strong laboratory systems are foundational to resilient health systems, particularly in the face of emerging and ongoing public health threats. She reaffirmed WHO’s commitment to supporting Ghana in building a system capable of responding effectively to both current and future challenges.

Receiving the items on behalf of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Franklin Asiedu, Director for Public Health, expressed appreciation for the continued partnership and support from WHO.

“We are deeply grateful to WHO for this timely and strategic support. These supplies will significantly strengthen our laboratory systems, enhance the accuracy of diagnostic services, and improve patient outcomes across the country”, he said

The donation is expected to boost the competence of laboratory professionals, strengthen quality assurance mechanisms, and support Ghana’s broader efforts to bolster health security and achieve universal health coverage.
