West Africa leaders agree on gradual sanctions on Guinea junta

As Malian authorities held a standard army parade on Thursday to mark the nation’s independence day within the presence of the top of Guinea´s army junta, Col Mamady Doumbouya,  West African leaders had been in a gathering in New York on the sidelines of the UN Basic Meeting.

They agreed on the emergency summit to impose gradual sanctions on Guinea’s junta over its inflexibility in setting a date to return to civilian rule.

A gathering abstract stated that the leaders agreed on “gradual sanctions” on a listing of individuals linked to the Guinean junta who might be recognized “very quickly” by the bloc’s management.

The West Africa bloc has been fighting a string of army coups within the area previously two years.

Mali underwent coups in August 2020 and Could 2021, adopted by Guinea in September 2021 and Burkina Faso in January.

ECOWAS has lifted robust sanctions imposed on Mali’s army regime, accepting a March 2024 return to civilian rule.

However Mali and Guinea stay suspended from ECOWAS our bodies.

Ecowas had condemned the arrest of the Ivorian troopers and had determined to ship the presidents of Ghana, Togo and Senegal to Mali to acquire their launch on Tuesday, September 27.
