The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has debunked a viral list making the rounds on social media, which claimed that results from over 100 schools across Nigeria had been cancelled in the just-released 2025 WASSCE.
The list, which surfaced shortly after WAEC announced the release of the 2025 results, falsely claimed that certain schools had their students’ results completely cancelled due to exam malpractice.
It also included a forged directive asking principals of the affected schools to report to WAEC’s Lagos office with candidates’ answer scripts and supporting documents.
But in a swift response, WAEC took to its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday to deny any connection to the list. “Kindly ignore any message listing schools whose results were supposedly cancelled,” the examination body wrote.
WAEC stressed that it does not instruct schools to submit candidates’ scripts to its offices under any circumstance, questioning how such materials could even be retrieved after exams.
“WAEC will never ask any centre to bring scripts of candidates to the office. Where would they get them from?” the council said.
This clarification comes after WAEC’s head of the Nigeria office, Amos Josiah Dangut, announced on Monday that the council had withheld the results of 192,089 candidates for alleged involvement in examination malpractice.
These offences reportedly included the use of mobile phones during exams and collusion between candidates.
Still, the council made it clear that the forged list circulating online was not an official document and advised the public to be cautious of unverified information.
WAEC further urged students, parents, and school administrators to rely solely on updates shared through its verified platforms and trusted media outlets, warning against falling for fake news.
