Vancouver Whitecaps v Sporting Kansas City: Muller wants to maintain entertainment factor

Thomas Muller is pleased to see the Vancouver Whitecaps pairing positive results with an entertainment factor, calling upon their fans to pack out BC Place for Friday’s meeting with Sporting Kansas City.

The Whitecaps are top of the Western Conference with six wins and one defeat so far this season, with their superior goal difference putting them ahead of Los Angeles FC.

Having beaten New York City 2-0 in their most recent fixture, Vancouver have outscored their opponents by 15 goals (19 to four) through their first seven matches this year.

The only team to record a higher goal differential through their first seven games of a season in MLS history was Los Angeles FC in 2019 (+16), who won the Supporters’ Shield.

“It’s enjoyable not only because I love this game, but also because we are delivering week in, week out,” Muller said as he spoke to reporters after a training session on Wednesday.

“Even in the games we are maybe not at our best, we are grinding in and trying to fight until the last second. So yeah, it’s worth it. We will try our best to get the people into B.C. Place for a reason.”

But away from the pitch, reports have suggested the Whitecaps’ long-term future in Vancouver could be in doubt, with the club’s owners struggling to find a buyer after placing them up for sale in 2024.

Financial concerns over their lease at BC Place have led to claims the Whitecaps are running out of time to find a way to stay in Vancouver, and Muller wants the team to provide the city with a reason to push for a permanent home.

“It’s not in our control, but I feel that we can provide something, to get kind of a feeling going,” the German added. “And maybe the fans, maybe they also should stand up a little bit more to avoid it.”

Sporting KC, meanwhile, are bottom of the West with just four points from seven matches, while they were also stunned 3-0 by the Colorado Springs Switchbacks in the U.S. Open Cup in midweek, leaving head coach Raphael Wicky furious.

Wicky said afterwards: “I gave the team a message and I think we are all in the same boat, right?

“I told them that we all must ask ourselves, ‘why were we not ready for this fight in the first half?’ That’s a question every individual has to ask themselves. ‘Why were they more hungry? Why did they want it more?’

“I don’t want a response right now. We travel back now, and then we will sit together and we will have to prepare for the next game, which is arriving very, very quickly.”

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Vancouver Whitecaps – Brian White

White scored his sixth regular-season goal of 2026 in last week’s 2-0 win over NYCFC.

That is the best return ever by a Whitecaps player through the first seven games of an MLS season, bettering Paul Rivero’s return of five goals at this stage of 2015.

Sporting Kansas City – Jacob Bartlett

Bartlett scored his first MLS goal last Saturday against the San Jose Earthquakes, doing so at 20 years and 186 days old.

He is the first player under the age of 21 to score a goal for Sporting KC since Alenis Vargas (20 years, 187 days) in June 2024.

MATCH PREDICTION – VANCOUVER WHITECAPS WIN

The Whitecaps have won four straight matches against Sporting KC, the longest regular-season winning streak by either team in their all-time series.

That is tied for the Whitecaps’ longest regular-season winning run against any single MLS opponent (also versus Real Salt Lake between 2014 and 2015).

Vancouver are huge favourites to continue that run here, given their excellent start to the year and Kansas City’s poor start.

Sporting KC have conceded 17 goals in the 2026 regular season, with only Orlando City (24) and CF Montreal (19) allowing more.

That is tied for Sporting’s second-most goals conceded through the first seven games of a season, having only shipped more in their inaugural campaign in 1996 (18).

OPTA WIN PROBABILITY

Sporting Kansas City – 11%
