President Trump now has his eye on Portland, Oregon, as another city where he could send in the National Guard to help fight crime.

He said he recently saw TV reports showing the “destruction of the city,” where fierce protests broke out against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Portland hadn’t previously been on his list of cities, such as Baltimore, Chicago and New Orleans, that could need federal intervention to fight lawlessness.

In Portland, recent violent anti-ICE protests included incidents of burning flags and a guillotine being rolled out in front of ICE’s field office in the city, as Fox News reported on Labor Day.

The president said the demonstrators are “paid terrorists [and] agitators.”

“They get paid money by radical left groups, not radical right groups, radical left groups, and they get paid a lot of money,” he said.

If the National Guard winds up going to Portland, he said, they will “wipe them out.”

“They won’t even stand the fight. They will not stay there. They’ve ruined that city,” Mr. Trump said, adding that in Portland, “it’s like living in hell.”

Mr. Trump previously deployed National Guard troops to support federal deportation efforts in Los Angeles and in the District of Columbia to fight crime.

Politicians in the Democratic-run cities targeted by Mr. Trump have opposed federal intervention. But Mr. Trump said Wednesday that New Orleans could be the next stop because Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry, a Republican, asked for federal help.

“So we’re making a determination now, do we go to Chicago or do we go to a place like New Orleans where we have a great governor, Jeff Landry, who wants us to come in and straighten out a very nice section of this country that’s become quite tough, quite bad,” Mr. Trump said Wednesday.

On Friday, Mr. Trump said he has decided which city will see National Guard troops next, but refused to say where.
