Swansea City have appointed Vitor Matos as their new head coach on a four-year contract.

The Championship club sacked Alan Sheehan earlier this month, with the Swans currently 20th in the English second division.

This will be Matos’ second senior managerial role after taking charge of Portuguese second-tier club, Maritimo, ahead of the 2025-26 season.

He won seven of his 12 league games at the helm (D2 L3), with his side scoring 15 goals and conceding nine to sit at the top of the division.

The 37-year-old, who was previously the elite development coach at Liverpool, will take charge of Swansea’s league fixture against Derby County on Tuesday.

Swansea were reportedly interested in Kim Hellberg, who was appointed as Rob Edwards’ successor at Middlesbrough on Monday, but chief executive Tom Gorringe insisted Matos was their first option.

“We spoke to a range of candidates, and Vitor was the clear stand-out with a cohesive plan of how to take our squad forward,” said Gorringe.

“Vitor has spent over a decade working at elite clubs and has been a trusted figure for some of the best coaches operating in the modern game.

“He is committed to playing an attacking brand of football, and to developing players technically and tactically, and we are sure supporters are going to enjoy watching his Swansea City team in action.”
