Nigeria’s insurance industry has been thrown into mourning following the passing of Rotimi Edu, lawyer, a former president of the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB), and also managing director of QuickLink Insurance Brokers, whose contributions to the growth, professionalism and transformation of the sector earned him enduring respect across the financial services industry.
Widely regarded as one of the most cerebral and forward-looking figures in insurance broking, Edu left behind a legacy defined by leadership, reform advocacy, professional excellence and unwavering commitment to the advancement of insurance practice in Nigeria.
Tributes have continued to pour in from regulators, brokers, insurers and industry stakeholders, all describing him as a visionary leader, legal luminary and institution builder whose impact would remain etched in the history of Nigeria’s insurance industry.
Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, commissioner for Insurance/ CEO of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), described Edu as an illustrious past president of the NCRIB whose tenure left an indelible mark on the insurance profession.
According to Omosehin, Edu distinguished himself through brilliance, foresight and uncommon dedication to the advancement of insurance practice in Nigeria.
“Edu was not only a towering figure in the insurance broking profession but also a visionary leader whose tenure as President of NCRIB left an indelible mark on the industry. His brilliance, foresight and unwavering dedication to the advancement of insurance practice in Nigeria distinguished him as one of the most impactful leaders of his generation,” he said.
He further described the late insurance icon as “a man of uncommon intellect and boundless energy, a cauldron of ideas and a passionate advocate for reform and innovation,” noting that even in the face of health challenges, Edu remained deeply committed to the Council and the insurance industry.
Omosehin said the vacuum created by his passing would be deeply felt not only by his family and business associates at Quicklink Insurance Brokers, but also by the NCRIB and the wider insurance community.
Ekeoma Ezeibe, president of the NCRIB, also mourned the former council president, describing him as one of the most intelligent, sociable and progressive leaders the Council had produced.
“ Edu would be remembered as one of the most intelligent, forward-looking and sociable Presidents the Council has had. A man of many parts, Edu was a cauldron of ideas and a strong proponent of change. Despite his grinding indisposition, his love for the Council remained strong and unwavering,” Ezeibe said.
Similarly, Kunle Ahmed, chairman of the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA), described Edu as an exceptional leader and visionary insurance practitioner who devoted decades of his professional life to strengthening collaboration, professionalism and regulatory growth within the industry.
Ahmed noted that as the 21st President of the NCRIB, Edu championed initiatives that deepened collaboration between brokers and underwriters, helping to foster greater unity within the insurance ecosystem.
“Rotimi Edu was a titan whose commitment to professionalism and ethical standards was exemplary. His passing leaves a massive vacum that will be deeply felt across the entire financial services sector,” he said.
The NIA chairman further highlighted Edu’s role as a member of the prestigious National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, where he consistently brought strategic policy insight into industry discourse and advocated reforms aligned with modern economic realities.
Beyond insurance broking, Rotimi Edu built a distinguished profile as a legal practitioner, insurance consultant and real estate expert with extensive experience spanning insurance law, commercial law, land matters, arbitration and claims settlement.
He held a Higher National Diploma in Insurance and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Lagos and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2003.
Throughout his career, he handled several complex insurance claims involving life, general and liability insurance, health insurance and claims determination for clients and insurance companies.
