RIVERS (Sundiata Publish) – The Democracy Watch Community (DWN) has criticized Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for allegedly deploying thugs to forcibly take away 23 native authorities chairmen from workplace after their tenure expired.
The group described the transfer as a brazen assault on democracy, which it stated resulted in tragic lack of lives and an entire breakdown of legislation and order within the state.
Recall that some youths loyal to the governor on Tuesday stormed some native authorities headquarters to evict elected LG officers and destroy authorities properties after Fubara’s deal with.
In an announcement signed by Mr Godfrey Titus, the Democracy Watch Community stated Fubara’s behaviour was unacceptable because it set a harmful precedent for the erosion of democratic norms in Nigeria.
The DWN claimed that the incident was a sign of Fubara’s violent disposition, in addition to a reminder of his “disregard for democratic ideas”.
The Democracy Watch Community urged the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Authorities and related authorities to take swift motion and make sure the restoration of peace and order in Rivers State till the courtroom guidelines on the matter.
“The Democracy Watch Community (DWN) vehemently condemns the motion of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who deployed thugs to forcibly take away Native Authorities Chairmen from workplace mere hours after their tenure expired.
“This brazen assault on democracy has resulted within the tragic lack of two lives and an entire breakdown of legislation and order within the state. Governor Fubara’s actions are a gross violation of the rule of legislation and a blatant disregard for the democratic course of.
“The case for tenure elongation for the chairmen continues to be pending in courtroom, and but, the governor selected to take the legislation into his personal palms, using thugs to intimidate and harass elected officers.
“This habits is unacceptable and units a harmful precedent for the erosion of democratic norms in Nigeria. Governor Fubara has a historical past of violence and tends to go to any size to show some extent to his perceived political opponents. This newest incident is a stark reminder of his disregard for human life and democratic ideas.
