Raiders linebacker Blake Martinez introduced his retirement from the NFL on Thursday in a call that shocked NFL followers.
“I’m asserting my retirement from the sport of soccer!” Martinez posted on Instagram on Thursday.
“I had a tremendous journey with some unimaginable franchises, and made lifelong friendships. I’ve chosen to step away from this profession at the moment to deal with my household and future passions! I’m excited for this new journey and recognize all of the followers and organizations which have supported me all through the years.”
Martinez has battled accidents over his final couple of seasons within the NFL, however has been productive when he’s been on the sphere. Martinez recorded 11 tackles in Las Vegas’ loss to the Jaguars on Sunday, which was his greatest recreation of the season.
Over the course of 6.5 seasons within the NFL, Martinez tabbed 706 mixed tackles, 39 tackles for loss and 13 sacks over his time spent with the Packers, Giants and Raiders.
