April 6 (UPI) — Police in Burlington, Vt., say they’re investigating a potential arson after a fireplace was deliberately set exterior Sen. Bernie Sanders‘ workplace on Friday.
The Burlington Fireplace Division in a post stated it responded to a fireplace on the constructing that homes Sanders’ workplace on the third ground.
Firefighters stated they discovered a fireplace within the vestibule and the sprinklers activated between the elevator and the doorway door to the senator’s workplace. They extinguished the fireplace and evacuated the encompassing workplaces.
No accidents have been reported, and Sanders was not in his officer on the time.
Burlington police stated in a statement to media outlets that an “unknown male topic” entered the vestibule and “sprayed an obvious accelerant on the doorway door.”
Police stated he then lit the accelerant on fireplace, which engulfed the door and a part of the vestibule, “impeding the egress of employees members who have been working within the workplace and endangering their lives.”
The sprinkler system largely extinguished the fireplace by the point firefighters arrived. There was “average” water injury to the door of Sanders’ workplace, and the third ground and under flooring sustained “important” water injury, police stated.
After an investigation involving the Burlington Police Division and Vermont State Police, Burlington firefighters deemed the blaze “incendiary in nature,” and the investigation was transferred to the State Police.
Police stated the suspect continues to be at giant, and no motive has been decided.
