Police arrest 19 protesters in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has confirmed the arrest of at the very least 19 members of the proscribed Islamic Motion of Nigeria (IMN) protesting in opposition to the ruling of the Federal Excessive Courtroom concerning the worldwide passport of Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky.

A Federal Excessive Courtroom within the nation’s capital had earlier rejected an utility filed by Sheikh El-Zakzaky, asking the Division of State Companies, DSS, to launch his passport and that of his spouse.

However Justice Obiora Egwuatu, who delivered judgement on the matter, dominated that the Islamic cleric did not show that his passport was lacking.

The event angered Sheikh’s followers numbering over 400 who staged a protest from the Federal Excessive Courtroom to Eagle Sq. resulting in the blockage of main roads whereas demanding instant launch of their chief’s worldwide passport.

The FCT Command Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, in a press release stated the protest inconvenienced members of the general public, particularly commuters.



She stated: “Upon receiving misery calls from residents apprehensive of their security, police operatives have been swiftly deployed to the scene to assist officers already on floor monitoring the procession. On sighting the reinforcement crew, members of the IMN began throwing stones, Molotov cocktails, and different harmful objects on the officers.

“The illegal procession was dispersed utilizing minimal drive whereas nineteen (19) suspects have been arrested and can be charged in court docket following due means of the legislation.

“The FCT Command assures residents of its dedication to safety, security, and peace throughout the capital territory. No untoward incident was recorded as statement and monitoring continued.”
