OAU college students protest tuition hike

College students of the Obafemi Awolowo College, Osun State, have staged a protest in opposition to the hike in class charges.

The scholars, who stormed the varsity premises started the protest early Tuesday morning carrying placards studying “Once I dey pay 20k, I dey borrow cash. The place you gained make I see 90k? #FeeMustFall.”

The Secretary Common of the varsity College students’ Union, Akinboni Opeyemi, confirmed this to our correspondent, including that the scholar populace doesn’t agree with the present tuition price.

The scholars’ union on September 26 urged college students of the establishment to suspend cost of tuition charges, following the slash in price hike by the administration of the establishment.

The PUNCH reports that the administration of OAU reviewed the college charges payable by the scholars of the college.

An announcement by the Public Relations Officer of the college, Abiodun Olanrewaju, said that the administration decreased the charges after a gathering held with the scholars.

Olanrewaju had stated that the College students’ Union leaders had been adamant, insisting that the charges needs to be decreased by 50 per cent.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, nevertheless, said that the fees initially introduced have been decreased as follows:

“For the scholars in Humanities, the preliminary sundry expenses of N89, 200 for returning college students have been decreased to N76,000 whereas for the brand new college students within the Humanities, the preliminary charges of N151,200 have been decreased to N131,000.

Whereas talking with our correspondent, Opeyemi famous that the union requested a 50 per cent discount of the preliminary proposed price earlier than it was decreased by 15 per cent.
