NPFL giants name Olympic gold winner Uche Okechukwu sporting director

Enyimba have confirmed the appointment of former Super Eagles defender Uche Okechukwu as the club’s new sporting director, Soccernet.ng reports.

With that move, the Aba Elephants have handed a pivotal leadership role to one of the most respected figures in Nigerian football.

Okechukwu, widely known by his nickname ‘the Gentle Giant’, takes over following the resignation of the club’s previous sporting director. His appointment was formally communicated in a letter signed by Enyimba chairman Nwankwo Kanu, who praised the former international’s experience and character.

Kanu said the club’s hierarchy believes Okechukwu’s background as an elite player and his understanding of football structures will be central to Enyimba’s long-term ambitions. The chairman expressed confidence that the former defender would help drive standards, shape recruitment strategy and strengthen pathways for player development as the Aba-based club targets a return to dominance domestically and on the continent.

Okechukwu is a familiar figure in Nigerian football, revered not only for his achievements but also for his calm authority and professionalism during a distinguished playing career.

Uche Okechukwu: A decorated Super Eagles legend

Born in Lagos, Okechukwu began his career in the Nigerian league with Flash Flamingoes and Iwuanyanwu Nationale, winning back-to-back league titles in 1988 and 1989. His performances earned him a move to Europe in 1990, when he joined Brøndby in Denmark.

At Brøndby, Okechukwu quickly established himself as a first-team regular, winning two Danish league titles and playing a key role in the club’s run to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in 1990–91. His influence was such that he was named Brøndby’s Player of the Year in 1992.

A transfer to Fenerbahçe followed in 1993, where he enjoyed further success, winning two Turkish league titles and forming one of the division’s most reliable defensive partnerships. He would later return to Nigeria towards the end of his playing career, featuring for Ocean Boys and Bayelsa United.

Internationally, Okechukwu was a cornerstone of Nigeria’s golden generation. He won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994, featured at two World Cups and was part of the celebrated Olympic team that claimed gold in Atlanta in 1996. Kanu was captain of the Dream Team.

Now back at Enyimba in a strategic role off the pitch, the club’s management and supporters are hopeful that Okechukwu’s pedigree and steady leadership can help usher in a new period of progress and sustained success.

Enyimba have not won the UEFA Champions League in 22 years and last lifted the NPFL in 2023.
