The Super Eagles of Nigeria will face Tanzania in their opening game of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday.

Nigeria head into the tournament amid significant uncertainty. This is as the team has been unconvincing in recent months, and key players Ola Aina and William Troost-Ekong are absent from the squad.

Head coach Eric Chelle has divided opinion with his rare and unconventional style of play, while several of his decisions have also come under scrutiny. This tournament could represent his final opportunity to prove his mettle.

The Super Eagles go into the fixture as overwhelming favourites on paper, by virtue of their superior quality and achievements. As such, Chelle is expected to adopt a bold and assertive approach.

In this piece, Soccernet.ng predicts the Franco-Malian tactician’s potential lineup for Nigeria’s clash against Tanzania.

Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is expected to man the sticks for the Super Eagles. There were concerns over his fitness heading into the tournament, but he eased those worries with a solid outing against Egypt last week.

For now, his position as first-choice goalkeeper remains undisputed.

New boy Benjamin Fredrick will be a big miss for Nigeria, forcing Chelle to rely heavily on experienced heads at the back. Calvin Bassey is certain to start at centre-back due to his consistency and quality, with Semi Ajayi likely to partner him.

At right-back, Bright Osayi-Samuel is expected to step in following Ola Aina’s injury, while Zaidu Sanusi should retain his place at left-back.

Chelle typically deploys a two-man midfield against less formidable opponents, and a similar setup is expected against Tanzania.

Captain Wilfred Ndidi will provide cover in front of the defence, while Alex Iwobi will be tasked with dictating play. This setup leaves no room for Inter Milan-owned Ebenezer Akinsanmiro or Raphael Onyedika.

Galatasaray star Victor Osimhen will lead the line for the Super Eagles, having established himself as Nigeria’s standout performer at present.

He is likely to be partnered by Akor Adams, who has proven to be a reliable option when called upon. Samuel Chukwueze should start on the right wing, with Ademola Lookman operating from the left.

Both wingers will have significant defensive and creative responsibilities, often dropping into midfield to help create chances or support Iwobi and Ndidi, depending on the flow of the game.
