Nigeria: Govt Suspends Proposed Tax On Cellphone Calls

The communications minister says the deliberate excise responsibility on telecommunication companies has been suspended.

The federal authorities has suspended the proposed new tax on cellphone calls and different telecommunications companies.

The Minister of Communication and Digital Financial system, Isa Pantami, introduced this on Monday. He stated the deliberate excise responsibility on telecommunication companies has been suspended.

Mr Pantami spoke on the inaugural assembly of the Presidential Committee on Excise Responsibility for the Digital Financial system Sector in Abuja.

He stated the sector was already overburdened by extreme and repeated taxes.

The federal authorities had earlier stated it will start implementing the proposed excise taxes on telecommunications and beverage companies in 2023.

The Minister of Finance, Finances, and Nationwide Planning, Zainab Ahmed, introduced that the federal government was getting ready to implement a 5% excise tax on telecommunications companies, which might increase whole on cellphone companies to 12.5%. The sector has an present 7.5 per cent on its companies.

Nevertheless, Mr Pantami opposed the brand new tax, which might improve the price of telecommunications companies within the nation.

He stated the ministry was not consulted and criticised the timing of the plan.
