The introduction of a Woolworths Cafe at a Curro private school in Cape Town has set tongues wagging on social media.

WOOLWORTHS CAFE INTRODUCED AT CURRO CENTURY CITY SCHOOL

Last week, a screenshot of an email sent to Curro Century City parents announced the opening of Woolworths Cafe on the school premises.

Learners were encouraged to purchase from the retailer‘s menu using their bank card or with funds loaded on the school’s Karri app.

A few days later, a TikToker posted a clip of a look at the Woolies Cafe. Inside was a wide selection of hot beverages, sandwiches, and snacks, amongst many other things.

The clip – viewed over 160 000 times -had many social media users speculating about the transition of typical school tuckshops.

Shauwn Voges: “The fact that kids can order Woolies coffee at their school is crazy!”

Tania Hendricks: “Can’t school just be school with a little tuck shop? This is so unnecessary.”

Olstar: “This is such classism and elitism. A place of learning is meant to foster growth and camaraderie instead of financial exclusivity.”

Others, likely Curro parents, commended the initiative, hailing it as a “game-changer” for their children.

Curro is one of the largest private education groups in South Africa, spanning pre-primary through Grade 12.

It has 189 schools across 81 campuses

Curro Century City is located in Cape Town. School fees for high school are priced between R60 000 and R72 000 per annum.
