NERC Directs DisCos to Present Free Alternative for Previous Meters
The Nigerian Electrical energy Regulatory Fee (NERC) has directed distribution firms (DisCos) to switch out of date meters for his or her prospects for free of charge.
This mandate was outlined in a press release launched by the regulatory physique’s administration on Monday.
The directive follows latest experiences of some electrical energy firms requiring prospects to switch Unistar pay as you go meters.
NERC emphasised that the price of meter substitute falls solely on the distribution firms and reiterated that no buyer must be subjected to estimated billing.

“The Nigerian Electrical energy Regulatory Fee is conscious that some Distribution Corporations (DisCos) have instructed prospects to use and pay for the substitute of defective and out of date meters inside their franchise areas.
“This instruction contravenes the Fee’s Order No. NERC/246/2021 on the Structured Alternative of Defective and Out of date end-use Buyer Meters within the Nigerian Electrical energy Provide Trade. The Order clearly states that no buyer with a meter must be forcefully migrated to estimated billing.
“If any buyer’s meter is adjudged by any DisCo to be out of date or defective, it’s the accountability of the DisCo to switch the meter freed from cost, offered that the fault was not attributable to the shopper,” NERC stated.
