This scalable inexperienced hydrogen manufacturing, storage and distribution facility, powered by renewable power, is being delivered by way of a three way partnership between UK power main BP and Aberdeen Metropolis Council.

Part 1 of the challenge is anticipated to contain constructing a hydrogen refueling facility for buses, vehicles, vans and vans, whereas future phases may, reportedly, see manufacturing scaled up by way of additional funding to provide bigger volumes of inexperienced hydrogen for rail, freight and marine, in addition to provide of hydrogen for warmth and doubtlessly export.

A planning utility for the Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub was submitted in March 2023 and planning permission was granted on the finish of June 2023. The ultimate funding determination (FID) for the challenge was agreed in July 2024.

As disclosed, Hydrasun, a UK supplier of built-in fluid switch, energy and management merchandise, awarded the electrolyzer contract following its profitable bid to design and combine the hydrogen refueling station and related infrastructure.

To notice, Hydrasun has developed options for each transportation and industrial hydrogen purposes, reportedly finishing over 40 initiatives throughout the UK, Scandinavia and Europe.

Håkon Volldal, Nel’s President and CEO, commented: “We’re excited that Hydrasun has chosen Nel for this significant challenge. Hydrasun is an expert enabler with high quality backing, and we stay up for our collaboration, supporting them with fast-to-market and dependable electrolyser gear.”

Neil Thompson, CEO of Hydrasun, acknowledged: ”Awarding the preliminary contracts for main gear packages within the Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub challenge is a key milestone for the hydrogen market and a lift for the availability chain, highlighting our joint capabilities in delivering hydrogen initiatives within the UK.”

In different information, in February 2025, Nel formally signed a €135 million grant settlement with the EU’s Innovation Fund to help the industrialization of its next-generation electrolyzer expertise.

As per the data given in October 2024, this expertise is within the prototype stage, and the preliminary build-out is deliberate for an annual capability of 1-2 GW, using current area on the firm’s Herøya facility in Norway.

It is very important point out that, in January 2025, Nel determined to quickly halt manufacturing on the alkaline electrolyzer manufacturing facility in Herøya. The choice follows lower-than-expected order consumption in 2023 and 2024, the corporate revealed, including that in consequence, there’s a restricted want to provide new alkaline electrolyzer gear within the near-term.
