NCC Seizes N300m Value of Counterfeit Books at Onne Port

The Nigerian Copyright Fee (NCC) has made a big stride in combating mental property piracy by seizing three delivery containers of pirated books with a conservative market worth of over N300 million.

In a press assertion launched on Sunday, Dr. John Asein, the Director-Basic of the Fee, revealed that this milestone was achieved via a joint effort with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Division of State Providers (DSS), which helped intercept the containers at Onne Port in Rivers State.

The DG disclosed that the pirated books confiscated by the NCC have been copyrighted works belonging to outstanding Nigerian publishers, together with Africana First, Bounty Press, Evans, Be taught Africa, Macmillan, Metropolitan, and College Press Plc. Dr. Asein highlights the essential position of the Fee in safeguarding the mental property rights of Nigerian publishers and defending their works from unlawful replica and circulation.

“Our foremost headache was once with domestically printed books that are straightforward to establish because of their poor manufacturing high quality.

“However, we now have since seen a surge within the importation of pirated books, particularly from Asia with good high quality, competing with their originals.

“Many of those pirates, who’re brokers of international printers, now have the audacity to come back into Nigeria to scout for companies.

“Generally, they share lists of their pirated inventory with potential clients in Nigeria via rogue networks.

“In some circumstances, the imports are compromised, and the documentation doctored to deceive enforcement businesses,” he stated.
