The Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) has announced plans to celebrate its 50th anniversary on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at Eko Hotel, Lagos, in what promises to be a landmark gathering of industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders. The Golden Jubilee celebration, themed “Pioneering the Future of Energy in Africa”, will serve both as a tribute to the association’s legacy and a launchpad for its vision of the next half-century in Nigeria’s energy landscape.
Addressing journalists in Lagos on August 11, NAPE President, Johnbosco Uche, described the anniversary as a moment of pride and reflection for an organisation that has grown from the vision of a small group of geoscientists into the largest professional petroleum geoscience body in Africa. Founded in 1975 by pioneering Nigerian professionals, NAPE was established to champion excellence, professionalism, and national development in the oil and gas industry.

Over the years, the association has played a pivotal role in shaping policies, fostering collaboration, and setting professional standards in Nigeria’s energy sector. Uche highlighted NAPE’s contributions in advocacy, policy influence, and strategic engagement with government agencies to create investment-friendly and sustainable exploration frameworks. These interventions, he said, have helped to sustain the oil and gas industry through different phases of national and global economic change.
NAPE’s influence has also extended beyond policy into academia. Through its University Assistance Program, the association has supported over 60 geoscience departments across Nigerian universities with equipment, software licenses, books, training workshops, and mentorship. This initiative, Uche noted, has bridged the gap between academic training and industry needs, ensuring that new graduates are equipped with relevant skills to thrive in a dynamic energy market.
Professional development remains central to NAPE’s mission. Over the past five decades, the association has organised annual conferences, technical workshops, field excursions, and specialised training programs, providing members with opportunities to stay current with global best practices. Uche emphasised that this commitment to capacity building is part of what has made NAPE a “beacon of technical leadership” in Africa’s energy sector.
The association has also been at the forefront of Nigeria’s conversation on energy transition. It has promoted a balanced approach that embraces renewable energy, intentional gas development, and frontier basin exploration while upholding sustainable development goals. According to Uche, NAPE’s position is clear: the future of energy in Africa must combine innovation with inclusiveness, environmental responsibility, and economic growth.
The anniversary celebrations will be marked by a series of high-profile engagements. The Honourable Minister of Petroleum Resources is expected to deliver a special message, while keynote addresses will come from key figures such as the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited and the Chief Commission Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).
A highlight of the event will be a high-level CEO panel session exploring how to unlock opportunities for the next 50 years in Nigeria’s energy sector. In addition, 50 distinguished professionals and institutions will be honoured for their exceptional contributions to the industry. The celebrations will culminate in a gala night and awards ceremony recognising leadership, excellence, and dedication to nation-building.
Uche urged the Nigerian media and public to join in the celebration, stressing that the country’s energy journey is about “people, prosperity, and possibilities” as much as it is about oil and gas. He reaffirmed NAPE’s commitment to professionalism, innovation, collaboration, and service to the nation.

“Fifty years ago, our founding members lit a torch of excellence that continues to shine today,” Uche said. “We honour their vision and hard work, and we look to the future with confidence. Together, we can pioneer the next 50 years of energy excellence in Nigeria and across Africa.”
The NAPE president expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, including industry partners, academic collaborators, and generations of members who have sustained the association’s relevance over five decades. As the organisation prepares for its next chapter, he said, it will remain focused on building capacity, advancing scientific knowledge, and fostering an energy industry that drives sustainable development.
With Nigeria’s energy sector facing global shifts in technology, environmental expectations, and investment patterns, NAPE’s 50th anniversary will not only be a celebration of history but also a strategic platform to chart the course for the nation’s role in Africa’s evolving energy future.
