The Lagos State Chapter of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has bemoaned the demise of seven harmless passengers who fell victims of a 20ft container which fell on a industrial minibus at Ojuelegba, Lagos on Sunday, twenty ninth January, 2023.
The group urged the Lagos State Authorities (LASG) to formulate a sustainable and enforceable coverage that may regulate the operation and motion of tankers and heavy- obligation lorries on main roads.
The assertion was signed by the chairman of Lagos Chapter of MURIC, Dr. Busari Muhammad Jamiu.
He stated: On Sunday, twenty ninth January, 2023, a tragedy occurred in Lagos the place seven (7) harmless lives have been misplaced. Based on the report, a truck conveying a 20ft container fell on a industrial minibus at Ojuelegba and killed the occupants.
“We’re unhappy that harmless lives are taken by heavy obligation lorries and fuel-laden tankers unabatedly on Lagos roads.
The Ojuelegba incident which occurred two days in the past was not the primary as Lagosians do witness myriads of tanker explosions and the falling of containers on harmless street customers. We’re asking the LASG when would such calamities be curtailed?
“It will likely be recalled that hardly two weeks in the past, one life was misplaced when a diesel-laden tanker fell on a stationary towing van at Otto Wharf, alongside Apapa – Oshodi Expressway, Mile 2, in Lagos.
This incident is simply one other instance of innumerable calamities which were skilled by Lagosians.
“Are we protected once more as street customers? What are the authorities doing in curbing and averting re-occurrence of those avoidable man-made tragedies?”; MURIC quizzed.
To this finish, MURIC urges LASG to formulate a sustainable coverage that may regulate the operation and motion of tankers and heavy- obligation lorries on our main roads. The enforcement of such insurance policies has turn out to be overdue in the event that they exist already.
“This might be performed along with all related authorities such because the Federal Highway Security Fee (FRSC), the Police, Lagos State Ministries of Transportation and Justice in addition to the tankers’ house owners and drivers associations.
“There have to be a framework on how, the place and when these vans and lorries are loaded, parked and moved round in Lagos to avert incessant lack of lives and properties of Lagosians.
It’s believed {that a} stich in time saves 9. Subsequently, LASG should not wait till such tragedy is recorded once more earlier than taking a proactive step. The time to behave is now!”
