Organised Labour has called for a new minimum wage of N154,000, citing the growing hardship facing Nigerian workers.

The demand was made by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council, an arm of the Nigeria Labour Congress, in a letter signed by Benjamin Anthony and Olowoyo Gbenga.

In the letter, the council said there is an urgent need to review salaries and allowances in the public service, arguing that the current pay structure no longer reflects the country’s harsh economic reality.

It explained that rising inflation, soaring food prices, and higher transport costs have continued to erode workers’ purchasing power.

According to the council, the proposed N154,000 minimum wage is meant to help workers maintain a decent standard of living as many households struggle to meet basic needs.

The group also urged the Federal Government to begin negotiations immediately on a salary review.

The demand comes as concern continues to grow over Nigeria’s cost-of-living crisis, with many families finding it harder to cope with daily expenses.
