Super Eagles defender Kevin Akpoguma will leave German Bundesliga side Hoffenheim next year, putting an end to a 12-year association with the club, Soccernet.ng reports.

Akpoguma joined Hoffenheim from Karlsruher in 2013. At the time, he was considered one of the top young prospects in German football.

He started with the youth team and later went on multiple loan spells at Fortuna Dusseldorf and Hannover 96. Since the 2019/2020 season, he has been a regular at the club.

However, his minutes have dropped drastically this season, which is quite surprising. He was a regular under Pellegrino Matarazzo last season, but this term, Akpoguma has made just two appearances. In fact, he has only made the matchday squad a handful of times.

Amid this lack of minutes at Hoffenheim, the 30-year-old center-back’s future has been hanging in the balance, as his contract expires at the end of the season.

Now, according to a fresh report from German reporter Florian Plettenberg, the Super Eagles defender has reached an agreement with the club not to sign a contract extension.

Both sides are looking for a change and have discussed this openly. A winter move could become an option if an offer comes in.@_dennisbayer | @SkySportDE pic.twitter.com/z4NW918PRb

As such, there is a possibility that the German club will sell Akpoguma in the January transfer window to avoid losing him on a free transfer.

Kevin Akpoguma was born in Germany to a German mother and a Nigerian father. As such, he represented Germany at youth level.

However, he switched allegiances to Nigeria in 2020 and earned his first cap in an international friendly against Algeria in Ocotber that same year.

He went on to win seven more international cars, but he has not played for the Super Eagles since June 2023.

However, national team football won’t be on the front burner for Akpoguma at the moment. Instead, he will be focused on getting his club career sorted.
