Joseph Boakai has been sworn in as Liberia’s president on Monday following his election victory over former soccer star George Weah, with the problem of tackling poverty and corruption

The 79-year-old narrowly beat former Ballon d’Or winner Weah in November’s run-off ballot with 50.64 p.c of the votes to 49.36 p.c.

He was sworn in for a six-year time period throughout a ceremony in parliament within the capital Monrovia at 10 am (10:00 GMT) within the presence of a number of overseas leaders and diplomatic delegations.

Joseph Boakai has 40 years of political expertise already behind him.

He was vice chairman from 2006 to 2018 underneath Liberia’s first feminine president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, earlier than being crushed by Weah within the 2017 election.
