Isak confident Liverpool upturn will come after international break

Alexander Isak is confident his form for Liverpool will improve after the international break, having adapted to life on Merseyside following his move from Newcastle United.

Isak joined the Premier League champions in a British record deal worth £130m last month, following a protracted saga that saw him frozen out of the Magpies’ squad after submitting a transfer request.

The striker has made six appearances for Arne Slot’s side in all competitions, but his only goal in Red came in a 2-1 EFL Cup win over Championship side Southampton.

Isak has made four starts and played 312 minutes overall for Liverpool, getting four of his nine shots on target while underperforming his tally of 1.41 expected goals (xG).

Slot’s side were knocked off the top of the Premier League table following a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea before the international break, their third straight loss after going down 2-1 at Crystal Palace and 1-0 against Galatasaray.

But Isak is confident both he and Liverpool will improve after the international break, having gone through a period of transition following the arrivals of seven new players.

“I’m working hard to push myself and play my game,” Isak said. “Things have been a bit tougher for us.

“I believe that as the team improves and things start to flow better, it will also get better for me.

“I’ve been really happy so far. I’m in a city where the team has a very good relationship with the fans, which is important. It’s been nice so far.”

Isak left Newcastle on poor terms, having accused the Magpies of breaking promises regarding his future before sitting out their first three games of the season, which they played without a recognised striker.

Isak has not been in contact with Newcastle boss Eddie Howe since his departure, and he does not see any point in reflecting on the manner of his exit.

“It’s something I don’t want to dwell on now,” Isak said. “It doesn’t benefit anyone, neither me nor Newcastle, so let it be.”
