Insecurity: Reps again creation of centre to manage proliferation of small arms

The Home of Representatives is to think about making a centre for the coordination, management and proliferation of small arms and light-weight weapons in Nigeria.

This adopted the advice of the Home Committee on Nationwide Safety and Intelligence as a measure to assist advance the warfare towards insecurity inside communities and the bigger society.

Shaaban Sharada (APC-Kano) offered the invoice in Abuja on Wednesday, titled “Invoice for an Act to offer for the Institution of the Nigerian Centre for the Coordination and Management of the Proliferation of Small Arms and Gentle Weapons in Nigeria”.

He stated the invoice was launched in 2019 and referred to the Committee on Nationwide Safety and Intelligence Pursuant to Order 12 Rule 2 after the second studying.

The committee held a public listening to on September 27, 2021, and memoranda and inputs acquired from the assorted stakeholders had been subjected to additional technical evaluation.

He stated the committee’s report was laid on the ground of the Home on July 21.

Mr Sharada stated ECOWAS member states thought of the proliferation of small arms and light-weight weapons to represent a serious risk to peace and stability inside member states.

He stated they had been involved on the circulate of small arms and light-weight weapons into West Africa and recognised the necessity to management arms transfers.

“In mild of this, member states agreed to the articles contained in Conference on Small Arms and Gentle Weapons.”

He stated the invoice sought to determine a Nationwide Institutional framework to implement the provisions of the ECOWAS Conference on Small Arms and Gentle Weapons 2006.

Mr Sharada stated the invoice would go an extended approach to promote and make sure the coordination of concrete measures for successfully controlling Small Arms and Gentle Weapons (SALW) within the nation.
