For years, correcting mistakes on a voter’s card meant standing in long queues at INEC offices or waiting for special registration exercises. But now, Nigerians no longer have to go through that stress.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has introduced a digital platform that allows registered voters to fix errors on their voter’s card right from the comfort of their homes.
It is new way to update your details
Through the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) online portal, INEC now gives citizens the chance to update personal details on their Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC).
This includes correcting misspelled names, adjusting dates of birth, changing names after marriage, or even modifying gender information when necessary.
The commission explained that the digital correction process was created to make the electoral register more accurate and transparent, while also reducing the pressure on physical registration centres.
Importantly, this option is only open to Nigerians who have already completed registration and collected their PVC.
What you can correct on your PVC
The Voter Update service covers several kinds of changes. For example:
- If your name was misspelled during registration, you can correct it.
- Married women or anyone who has legally changed their name can update it.
- If your date of birth was entered incorrectly, you can fix it.
- Gender details can also be adjusted where necessary.
By putting this process online, INEC is ensuring that citizens maintain accurate information without needing to travel or wait endlessly at registration centres.
Step-by-Step: How to Make the Changes
To use the update service, here’s how the process works:
- Visit INEC’s CVR portal – go to https://cvr.inecnigeria.org.
- Sign in using your personal login details.
- Go to the “Application” section and select “Update”.
- On the Update Pre-requisite page, confirm your eligibility by ticking the checkboxes.
- Search for your voter record using either your surname or the last six digits of your Voter Identification Number (VIN).
- If you have already revalidated your details, you can skip the photo capture step. Otherwise, you will be asked to take a new passport photo.
- Click “Proceed to Update” and enter the correct information for your name, date of birth, or other personal details.
- Upload scanned copies or photographs of your supporting documents, such as a birth certificate, sworn affidavit, or legal documents for a name change.
- Finally, submit your application and click “OK” to generate a slip. This slip serves as proof that you have updated your voter information.
Why this is important
This new process is more than just a convenience, it’s an important step in strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system.
Having accurate voter data helps INEC reduce errors in the register, it prevents duplicate records, and improves transparency ahead of elections.
For voters, it means less stress, no need for unnecessary travel, and a faster way to ensure their details match official records.
