Super Eagles and Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen came out on top in his side’s 1-0 win against Virgil van Dijk’s Liverpool back in September, Soccernet.ng reports.

The pair will play against each other in the UEFA Champions League’s round of sixteen, as they look to advance to the latter stages of the competition.

For the better part of the last decade, Virgil van Dijk has been the defensive reference point in the Premier League. Since his record-breaking move to Liverpool from Southampton eight years ago, the Dutchman has gone toe-to-toe with some of the most explosive forwards in world football — including some of Africa’s finest.

How Virgil van Dijk Has Fared Against Africa’s Top Strikers

From title-deciding clashes to Champions League nights under the lights, Soccernet.ng looks at how the Reds captain has performed against some of the continent’s most feared attackers.

Victor Osimhen

The pair have met across several games, with Osimhen playing against the former Celtic man during his time at Napoli and Galatasaray, and much of the spotlight fell on the duel between Van Dijk and Victor Osimhen.

Osimhen’s game is built on aggression, explosive runs in behind, relentless pressing, and aerial bravery. Yet Van Dijk has largely handled the Nigerian with calculated calm.

Rather than diving into duels, he has relied on positioning and timing, often forcing Osimhen wide or cutting off supply lines early.

While Van Dijk’s calmness has often robbed fans of a spectacle of strength, Osimhen has been on the winning side in two of his three clashes against the Liverpool captain.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

At his peak with Arsenal, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was one of the league’s most devastating finishers. His pace over distance posed a constant threat, particularly against high defensive lines. However, Van Dijk’s recovery speed and ability to delay attackers proved crucial in these encounters.

“He is rapid, so if they go direct, you have to be aware of the space in behind. He had maybe one chance, but he didn’t score. So all good,” Van Dijk said about the former Borussia Dortmund striker back in 2021.

Instead of engaging in foot races, the Liverpool centre-back often positioned himself to block passing lanes before the Gabonese could spin into space.

The pair have met eight times, and the one-time UEFA Champions League winner emerged victorious five times.

Nicolas Jackson

Since arriving at Chelsea, Nicolas Jackson has brought unpredictability and relentless movement to the Premier League. Jackson thrives in transitional moments, attacking space quickly and forcing defenders into uncomfortable decisions.

However, against Van Dijk, that chaos has often met control. The Dutch defender’s composure has typically neutralised Jackson’s urgency, limiting the Senegalese striker’s ability to isolate him in one-on-one scenarios.

The Senegalese striker has found the back of the net against Virgil just once in five games, but the centre-back was on the winning side in three of those games.

Sadio Mané

Though best remembered as Van Dijk’s former teammate at Liverpool, Sadio Mané remains one of Africa’s most lethal forwards of the modern era. Whether in domestic contests or European matchups following Mané’s switch to Bayern Munich, the dynamic between the two has always been fascinating.

Mané’s sharp movement inside and ability to attack the near post required total concentration. Yet Van Dijk’s aerial authority and ability to dominate central spaces often reduced Mané’s influence when they found themselves on opposite sides.

Across these matchups, one theme stands out: Van Dijk rarely allows elite African forwards to dictate games. He does not always shut them out entirely — few defenders can — but he consistently reduces their impact through positioning, timing, and physical dominance.

Against Africa’s best, Virgil van Dijk has more often than not, been in control.
