Ghana have parted ways with head coach Otto Addo just 72 days before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following a string of disappointing results.

The Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat against Germany in their second friendly of the March international break on Monday night.

That loss proved to be the final nail in the coffin, coming on the heels of a heavy 5-1 thrashing by Austria in Vienna.

These results extended a dismal run of form that has seen the team lose four consecutive matches, including two defeats during the November international break.

Ghana also failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations despite boasting a star-studded squad. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) finally took action on Monday by dismissing Addo, who leaves the role with a 36.4% win rate during his second spell in charge.

With the World Cup fast approaching, Ghana now face a race against time to appoint a successor to lead them into the tournament.

Soccernet.ng takes a look at four Nigerian coaches who could potentially take charge of the Black Stars ahead of their fifth World Cup appearance.

Samson Siasia

Former Super Eagles head coach Samson Siasia is a strong candidate for the role. He has significant experience at the elite level, having managed Nigeria at both the youth and senior levels. Recall that he led Nigeria to second place at the 2005 FIFA under-20 World Cup.

Siasia also earned silver with team Nigeria at the 2008 Olympics and bronze at the 2016 Olympics.

While he has been out of management since leading the Nigerian U-23 team in 2016, Siasia has previously been linked with the Rwanda and Cameroon national jobs and remains a viable, tactically astute option.

Augustine Eguavoen

Augustine Eguavoen currently serves as the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), but the 60-year-old has extensive experience as a head coach.

His familiarity with the pressures of international tournaments - having led Nigeria to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and taking over the team on interim basis on several occasions — could make him an appealing short-term or long-term option for the GFA.

With Eguavoen in charge, Nigeria has played some beautiful football in the past. Given the talent in that Ghanaian team, he could work wonders.

Emmanuel Amuneke

Emmanuel Amuneke is another highly qualified candidate, even though he is coaching Heartland in the Nigeria National League at the moment.

The 55-year-old brings a proven track record, famously guiding Tanzania to AFCON 2019 qualification after a long absence. He has also had stints in Egypt, Sudan, and Zambia.

Notably, Amunike has won a World Cup before. He led Nigeria to the title at the 2015 edition of the under-17 World Cup. That was the team that had the likes of Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, and the likes.

His disciplined approach would be a strong fit for a Black Stars side in need of direction before the World Cup.

Sunday Oliseh

Sunday Oliseh previously captained and coached Nigeria at the senior level, and he has the tactical pedigree to lead a team of Ghana’s stature.

He also coached in the Netherlands, playing a key role in Fortuna Sittard’s promotion to the Eredivisie in 2018. Oliseh has also worked in technical roles at FIFA, alongside coaching greats like Arsene Wenger.

With the quality that Ghana possess, Oliseh could definitely work wonders.
