Gov. Gavin Newsom has revealed his pick for Los Angeles mayor — and it’s incumbent Karen Bass, who’s faced heavy criticism for her handling of wildfires last year and to two high-profile challengers.

“I’ve known her for years. we have a great collaborative relationship, she’s has a remarkable career,” Newsom told Peter Hamby of Puck News. “I believe in her.”

The online rebuke to Newsom’s endorsement of Bass was swift, with one account on X responding: “Communists need to stick together.”

Bass is facing two well-known competitors in her reelection bid — conservative former reality TV star Spencer Pratt and Democratic Socialist city councilmember Nithya Raman.

The governor acknowledged he’s had differences with Bass over housing and homelessness policy — Bass strongly opposed SB 79, a law allowing denser housing developments that Newsom championed.

“We can get into some of the merits to merits… and we continue to kick the tires daily on Los Angeles fire rebuilding efforts,” Newsom said.

“We’ll work those things out, but I broadly do,” support Bass, Newsom said.
