The Gauteng Transport Inspectorate (GTI), in partnership with the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), has intensified its high-impact road safety operations ahead of the festive season, targeting unroadworthy vehicles and lawless driving behaviour across the province.

Between 1 and 7 December 2025, officers recorded significant enforcement results as part of the province’s safety campaign:

  • 93 unroadworthy vehicles discontinued, including 83 minibuses
  • 40 vehicles impounded for serious non-compliance
  • Over 500 manual and 808 electronic infringement notices issued
  • 137 taxi operators found driving without valid licences
  • 65 minibuses flagged for operating without licence discs

Attempted bribery

In addition, several motorists were arrested on charges ranging from attempted bribery to fraud, reckless driving and negligent driving.

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, welcomed the enforcement successes, reiterating the province’s firm stance on road safety.

“If a vehicle is not safe or roadworthy, it will not be allowed on Gauteng’s roads. Our priority is ensuring every family arrives safely this festive season,” the MEC said.

The GTI deployed a team of 96 officers during the operations and says it will continue tightening compliance measures throughout December. Officials emphasised that removing unsafe vehicles from the roads remains key to reducing crashes and fatalities during the busy travel period.

Motorists have been urged to repair defects, ensure they have the required documentation, and carry out safety checks before embarking on holiday travel.

Authorities say intensified operations will continue throughout the festive season as part of broader efforts to reduce accidents and fatalities.
