FG suspends proposed tax on cellphone calls

The federal authorities has suspended the proposed new tax on cellphone calls and different telecommunications providers.

The Minister of Communication and Digital Financial system, Isa Pantami, introduced this on Monday. He mentioned the deliberate excise obligation on telecommunication providers has been suspended.

Mr Pantami spoke on the inaugural assembly of the Presidential Committee on Excise Responsibility for the Digital Financial system Sector in Abuja.

He mentioned the sector was already overburdened by extreme and repeated taxes.

The federal authorities had earlier mentioned it could start implementing the proposed excise taxes on telecommunications and beverage providers in 2023.

The Minister of Finance, Finances, and Nationwide Planning, Zainab Ahmed, introduced that the federal government was making ready to implement a 5% excise tax on telecommunications providers, which might increase complete on cellphone providers to 12.5%. The sector has an current 7.5 per cent on its providers.

Nevertheless, Mr Pantami opposed the brand new tax, which might enhance the price of telecommunications providers within the nation.

He mentioned the ministry was not consulted and criticised the timing of the plan.
