Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham says talks over a new contract for Sarina Wiegman will be held “at an appropriate time”, following England’s Euro 2025 triumph.

The Lionesses became the first senior England team to win a major tournament on foreign soil on Sunday, beating Spain on penalties to retain their European Championship crown.

England are the second nation to retain the Women’s Euros title, after Germany, who won the tournament in 1989 and 1991, then triumphed six times in a row from 1995 to 2013.

Wiegman, meanwhile, has won the last three editions of the tournament, having led her native Netherlands to the 2017 title before overseeing England’s first triumph in 2022.

She is the third manager to win the trophy on three occasions, after Gero Bisanz (1989, 1991, 1995) and Tina Theune (1997, 2001, 2005) both did so with Germany.

With Silvia Neid overseeing Germany’s victories in 2009 and 2013, the last eight editions of the Women’s Euros have now been won by just three managers.

Wiegman is under contract until the end of the 2027 World Cup in Brazil, and though contract talks are not imminent, the FA does not intend to lose her.

“It’s a bit early for that,” Bullingham told BBC Sport. “We are delighted she is with us for the World Cup, and we will have that conversation at an appropriate time.

“She is an incredible manager and we’re delighted to be working with her, so that has to be up to her. We will have those conversations when they’re ready to go.”

England’s Euro 2025 triumph came despite them only leading for four minutes and 52 seconds across their three knockout-stage games (including stoppage time).

That is the shortest amount of time a title-winning side has spent in the lead in the knockout rounds of either the Women’s Euros or the Women’s World Cup.

Asked how England emerged victorious while attending a celebratory reception at 10 Downing Street on Monday, Wiegman told Sky News: “I don’t know! It feels very surreal.

“I just try to do my best every day, trying to bring people together, and I have so much quality around me. It needs to sink in. It was very special.

“I have to make my apologies for giving you lots of heart attacks! We made it through and that’s why we’re here now. The team is just incredible.”
