Ex-Chiefs coach: Jose should’ve called Pitso before joining Al Ahly

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Cavin Johnson has weighed in on the sacking of Jose Riveiro at Al Ahly.

Riveiro was fired just after seven games in charge of Al Ahly following a series of poor results since he came in from Orlando Pirates.

The Spaniard had won just one, drawn four and lost two of his opening seven games as Al Ahly.

Now, Johnson feels Riveiro joined Al Ahly at a time when they had not won the CAF Champions League which he believes was always going to be difficult.

Furthermore, Johnson is of the view that perhaps things would have been better had Riveiro went to Al Ahly with his own backroom staff just like Pitso Mosimane.

And for that reason, he believes Riveiro should have called Mosimane for advice when he first received the offer to join Al Ahly.

Johnson had a short stint with Al Ahly as one of Mosimane’s assistants when they won the CAF Champions League in 2021.

EX-CHIEFS COACH FEELS JOSE SHOULD HAVE CALLED PITSO BEFORE JOINING AL AHLY

“Before he [Riveiro] went there, Ahly didn’t win the Champions League, so going to that team is always difficult,” Johnson told FARPost.

“You must play Champions League every season and play to win it, and also, you cannot lose to a team like Pyramids FC because that team is not even 10 years old.

“There is always pressure to win everything in that club, but I think when we were there, Pitso managed that very well because he came with his whole technical team. I don’t think Riveiro went with anyone, which can be a problem.

“So, the best thing that Riveiro should have done was to call Pitso Mosimane to understand what he’s getting himself into.

“Coaching Al Ahly is not like coaching Pirates. Yes, Pirates is a big team, but Al Ahly is a Club of the Century; those things matter.”

COULD THIS HAVE SAVED RIVEIRO?
