Rob Edwards feels Wolves’ wins over Aston Villa and Liverpool can help to create some positive momentum at Molineux, even if their likely relegation from the Premier League is confirmed.

Wolves may appear destined to suffer the drop this season, but they are not going down without a fight, stunning Villa and Liverpool at Molineux within the space of four days.

Off the back of scoring Wolves’ clinching goal in Friday’s 2-0 success over Villa, Rodrigo Gomes put them ahead against the defending Premier League champions, only for Mohamed Salah to quickly equalise.

But Wolves dug deep as Andre’s shot deflected in off Joe Gomez four minutes into second-half stoppage time, the fifth time Liverpool have been beaten by a 90th-minute or later winner in the Premier League this season, the most of any team in a single campaign.

As he did after Gomes’ goal against Villa, Edwards ran down the touchline to celebrate Andre’s winner, and he hopes these results will forge a positive bond with the fans.

Asked about his celebrations by TNT Sports, Edwards said: “It’s my groin this time – I’m falling apart!

“This is Liverpool Football Club, never mind the position you’re in, any time you beat them you’ve got to enjoy the moment.

“They’re an amazing football club with an amazing manager and loads of great players. So yeah, it was a big, big night for us.

“What we’re trying to do is improve. We’re trying to build some momentum. We know the position we’re in. I know I’ve lost myself in that moment there.

“People might say we’re bottom of the league, but you saw the energy around this place. You have to enjoy it. We’re trying to turn things around.”

Wolves are the first side to beat two top-five teams while bottom of the table in a single Premier League season since West Brom in 2017-18 (versus Tottenham and Manchester United), and the first to ever do so back-to-back.

And even if many of their star players – including match-winner Andre – are likely to depart rather than stay in the Championship, Edwards says they have plenty to play for.

“We’re showing some fight and spirit, which I know is the bare minimum, but also some quality as well. We’re up against some top teams at the moment,” he added.

“The lads, whatever they’ve got to compete for, whether it’s themselves, a World Cup, their family or whether you want to be here next season, you’ve got to perform well, and they’re showing that.

“It took a while. When we first came in it was difficult. We were short of confidence. Initially, it was hard to turn results around. Our standards had to improve, and we had to work harder in training. Now we’re seeing the fruits of a lot of hard work.

“At 1-1, if there was going to be another goal, you’re expecting it to be Liverpool. We’ve almost had to win the game twice. That’s what makes me so glad.

“There’s a good energy around and a belief we’re going in the right direction. Whatever happens until the end of their 38th game, we’ll just keep fighting.”

Liverpool have a swift chance for revenge as the same fixture is repeated in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Friday, and Edwards expects Arne Slot’s side to show more, saying: “We’ve made them angry, we know it will be difficult on Friday.”
