Springbok star Eben Etzebeth swapped his rugby boots for a Santa suit on Christmas Day, surprising foster children at a safehouse in Langebaan on the West Coast with gifts, hugs and unforgettable memories.

The veteran lock arrived at the safehouse at around 09:30, where he spent time with the children, posing for photos, signing shirts and sharing warm festive embraces.

Sparked excitement

His unexpected appearance sparked excitement and joy among the children, many of whom were stunned to discover that “Santa” was in fact one of South Africa’s most celebrated rugby players.

The visit was shared on the For the Children safehouse Facebook page, where staff described the moment the children realised Santa was Etzebeth as one filled with shock and happiness.

They said the day was among the most special moments in the children’s lives, with some calling it their “best Christmas ever.”

The organisation thanked Etzebeth, his family, volunteers and the broader community for helping make the day possible.

Volunteers assisted with organising gifts and photographs, ensuring every child felt included and celebrated.

Lifted spirits

Caregivers at the safehouse said Eben Etzebeth’s visit lifted spirits and brought comfort, particularly for children living away from their biological families.

His presence, they noted, helped create a sense of normalcy, warmth and belonging during the festive season.

The heartwarming gesture highlights how small acts of kindness – especially from well-known figures – can leave a lasting impact on vulnerable children and turn Christmas into a truly magical experience.
