David Adeleke Afrobeats superstar, popularly known as Davido, has announced his decision to formally join the Accord Party, aligning politically with his uncle, Ademola Adeleke, the Osun State governor. This move adds celebrity weight to the governor’s recent defection ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

The award-winning singer disclosed this on Tuesday via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, stating that he would be in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on Wednesday to collect his Accord Party membership card at the Government House. “I will be live in Osun to pick up my @AccordPartyNG membership card @ Imole House Osogbo tomorrow… see you soon accordingly,” Davido wrote, tagging both the party and the governor.

Davido’s announcement comes barely two weeks after Governor Adeleke adopted the Accord Party as his new political platform, a development that has triggered fresh political calculations within Osun State as parties position themselves ahead of the next election cycle.

Governor Adeleke formally announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Accord Party on December 9, 2025. The declaration was made at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Osogbo, in the presence of national and state leaders of the Accord Party, party supporters, and political allies.

Explaining his decision at the time, Adeleke cited a lingering leadership crisis at the national level of the PDP, which he said had weakened internal cohesion and created uncertainty about the party’s future direction. According to the governor, the unresolved disputes within the PDP made it difficult for him to confidently pursue his re-election bid under the party’s platform.

He revealed that he officially joined the Accord Party on November 6, 2025, following consultations with key stakeholders, political leaders, and opinion shapers across Osun State. Adeleke described the move as a strategic step to secure a stable and unified platform that would support continuity in governance and his second-term ambition.

“The decision was not taken lightly,” the governor said during his defection announcement, noting that his priority remained sustaining the developmental agenda of his administration while avoiding distractions caused by internal party conflicts.

Davido had earlier reacted to his uncle’s resignation from the PDP by reposting the announcement on social media with the caption “Jeje…”, a response that many supporters interpreted as a subtle endorsement. His latest declaration now confirms his decision to formally align with the Accord Party, moving from symbolic support to open political participation.

Although Davido has previously shown interest in civic engagement, particularly in encouraging youth participation in elections, his formal association with a political party marks a notable shift. Analysts say his influence, especially among young voters, could help amplify the visibility of the Accord Party and energise grassroots mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2026 polls.

Osun State’s political landscape has remained fluid since Governor Adeleke’s defection, with both ruling and opposition parties recalibrating strategies. Davido’s entry into the Accord Party further underscores the growing momentum around the governor’s new platform as the countdown to the governorship election continues.

As political activities gradually intensify, attention will remain on how the Accord Party consolidates its base and whether high-profile endorsements, such as Davido’s, translate into tangible electoral advantage in Osun State.
