Shoppers and staff were left shaken after a car crashed into a Spar supermarket in Parow Valley on Thursday, triggering scenes of panic inside the busy store.

According to initial reports, the incident occurred when the driver attempted to start his vehicle but failed to engage the handbrake.

Rolled forward

The car reportedly rolled forward, knocking the driver down before crashing through the entrance of the supermarket.

Eyewitnesses say the incident unfolded suddenly, with a loud crash reverberating through the store as the vehicle ploughed inside.

Customers ran for safety as shelves and items were struck, sending goods flying and creating chaos in the aisles.

‘Screams’

“It was terrifying,” said one shopper, describing screams and people rushing towards the exits as the car came to a stop inside the shop.

Emergency services were alerted to the scene, and the extent of injuries and damage was still being assessed at the time of reporting. Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The supermarket was temporarily closed following the crash as officials ensured the area was safe and damage could be evaluated.
