Capitec plans changes to branches and ATMs in 2026

Capitec customers could see more physical banking options in the coming years, as the bank plans to grow both its branch footprint and ATM network in 2026.

This comes at a time when many of South Africa’s traditional banks are doing the opposite, steadily reducing the number of branches and ATMs as more customers move to digital banking.

Capitec says expanding access remains a priority for them.

More bank branches and ATMs from Capitec

Speaking to Mybroadband, the bank said it was important that banking be accessible for everyone, adding that they would continue to invest in their physical footprint.

“In 2026, we are planning a net increase in both our branch footprint and our ATM network.” Capitec said.

The bank currently operates more than 860 branches and around 8 500 branded ATMs across South Africa. It says future growth will be guided by customer demand and changing market needs.

At the same time, Capitec plans to refine where exactly those branches and ATMs are located.

“We will keep optimising our footprint by relocating selected branches and ATMs as market dynamics change,” it said.

“This means moving infrastructure to stronger, more convenient nodes to ensure we remain present where our clients need us most.” Capitec added.

Capitec stands out in a banking landscape where physical infrastructure is shrinking. Since 2019, it has added roughly 3 800 ATMs, making it the only major South African bank to significantly expand its ATM network over that period. It has also continued to grow its branch presence.
