The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declared a state of emergency across West Africa.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, by ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level in Abuja.

The meeting was convened in response to a recent wave of coups and failed mutinies in the sub-region.

Touray said the developments highlight the need for serious reflection on the future of democracy in the region and the urgent need to strengthen collective security.

More details will be provided later.
