Bolt, a ride-hailing platform that has been accused of holding its drive companions to poor requirements, has blocked over 6,000 drivers in South Africa during the last six months for misconduct.

“The corporate will proceed to completely block drivers and riders who’ve been reported for misconduct from accessing the platform,” Bolt mentioned in an announcement to TechCabal.

Gig drivers in South Africa have confronted allegations of misconduct, harassment and sexual assault. Threats of litigation and public backlash have compelled ride-hailing platforms to behave.

In March, a former Bolt driver Emmanuel Mudau was convicted and sentenced to 2 life sentences and two 15-year phrases for rape, kidnap and, assault. Final month, one other driver was arrested and charged for allegedly stabbing two younger girls throughout a feud over their drop-off location in Cape City.

Following the Mudau case, Godrich Gardee Attorneys acknowledged that it could launch a civil declare in opposition to Bolt for failing to guard passengers. The Cape City case has led to intensive social media outrage in regards to the security of ladies passengers on ride-hailing platforms.

Bolt has been on a fast growth drive within the southern Africa area. After initially launching in South Africa in 2016, the corporate has launched in Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Namibia during the last eight months, bringing its complete African footprint to 14 markets.
