Nigeria’s cinema industry is buzzing again, thanks to two Nollywood blockbusters, Gingerrr and The Herd, which have powered the nation’s box office to an impressive ₦573.2 million. The latest data from the Nigerian Box Office confirms that these two films have not only pulled massive crowds but also reaffirmed the growing influence of locally made stories on the big screen.

A Big Win for Nigerian Films

Between late September and October 2025, both titles dominated theatres nationwide, proving that Nigerian audiences are increasingly choosing homegrown entertainment over international releases. Together, they contributed to one of Nollywood’s most profitable months this year.

Leading the charge is Gingerrr, directed by Yemi Morafa and produced by Bolaji Ogunmola, Kiekie, and Bisola Aiyeola. The film opened strong, raking in ₦78.9 million within its first three days and surpassing ₦82 million by the end of its debut weekend. Six weeks later, it has amassed ₦435.5 million — a remarkable feat that places it among the highest-grossing Nigerian films of the year.

The movie’s mix of fast-paced action and lighthearted comedy struck a chord with audiences, particularly young viewers. Featuring an energetic cast including Bisola Aiyeola, Bimbo Ademoye, and Timini Egbuson, Gingerrr blends humor, thrill, and relatable characters in a way that reflects Nollywood’s evolving taste for entertaining yet authentic stories.

What Kept the Momentum Going

Industry watchers note that Gingerrr got a major push from Cinema Day, when ticket sales surged despite prices doubling from ₦1,000 to ₦2,000. Attendance reportedly increased by around 5% compared to last year, with the film recording the highest single-day ticket sales on November 1, even surpassing global hits like Deadpool & Wolverine and The Equalizer 3.

While Gingerrr led the pack, The Herd also drew strong numbers, solidifying Nollywood’s hold on the local box office. Directed by Etim-Effiong and released on October 17, the film earned ₦28.8 million in its first weekend and ₦30.1 million by the end of its first week. Three weeks later, its total reached ₦137.7 million.

According to the Nigerian Box Office, The Herd achieved two consecutive weekends of growth — a rare milestone for a non-holiday release. It now sits alongside King of Boys and Brotherhood as one of the few Nigerian titles to achieve that level of sustained success.

A New Kind of Nollywood Storytelling

Co-produced by FilmOne Studios, ToriTori Films, Serendipity HHC, and Airscape, The Herd explores love, family, and generational tension through a story deeply rooted in South West Nigerian culture. The film’s mix of psychological depth and social themes reflects Nollywood’s growing storytelling maturity — one that connects with audiences emotionally while staying culturally grounded.

Beyond the Big Two

While Gingerrr and The Herd have stolen the spotlight, other titles are keeping the box office vibrant. Trons: Ares pulled in ₦13.8 million in its third week to reach ₦107.7 million total, Idia climbed to ₦18 million after its second week, while Regretting You began its run with ₦4.4 million. Blackphone 2 also maintained its pace with ₦3.8 million, bringing its cumulative earnings to ₦23.8 million.
