A man is in custody after allegedly driving his car into a crowd outside a nightclub in East Hollywood early Saturday, injuring 30 people, including seven critically.

The incident occurred shortly about 2 a.m. near the intersection of North Vermont and Melrose avenues. Police said the 29-year-old driver had been removed from a nearby business before getting behind the wheel of a Nissan Versa and accelerating into a group of pedestrians waiting on the sidewalk.

The vehicle struck several individuals and collided with a taco truck and a valet stand before coming to a stop. Of those injured, six are in serious condition, and several others suffered minor injuries but declined hospital transport. Most of the victims were female.

After the crash, bystanders attacked and beat the suspect. Police say they are unsure whether the gunshot wound the man suffered occurred before, during, or after the assault. The driver was taken into custody and hospitalized; his condition is stable.

Authorities do not believe terrorism was involved but are investigating whether alcohol, drugs, or road rage played a role. A fight had reportedly broken out near the club before the vehicle rammed the crowd.

Community members expressed shock and concern over the incident, which disrupted what should have been a night out. Local officials promised to review safety measures in nightlife districts.

Police continue to investigate the motive and exact sequence of events leading to the crash. Charges are expected to be filed once the investigation concludes.
